Still here...Still Painting!

It's been a while since I've updated this blog! Covid 19 starting in 2020 pretty much explains that! I thought I'd post the Music Country Grand Prix paintings both from 2020 and 2021 to catch up. The painting done for the Saddle Up! winner of the MCGP at Brownland Farm 2019 was David Jennings and Caddy R, Congrulations to both of them, what a team!

The second painting is from the winner of the 2020 MCGP, Kevin Mealiff and Marcos Vande Dude Heihoef..... It was fun to watch the event and see this team win despite the weird fact that no outside spectators were allowed that year. That still seems so surreal. It was a cool, rainy, misty fall day....so unlike the usual spring dates.....but it was a joy to paint the background to reflect that particular day! Congratulations to Kevin and Marcos Vande dude Heihoef!

I'm currently working on the winner of the 2021 Grand Prix.....I'll update when it is finished!

JPJhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07852143749110425586noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2808378000268017325.post-50561288115930387392019-05-09T12:22:00.000-07:002019-05-09T12:22:11.689-07:00Saddle Up! and the 2019 Music Country Grand Prix

We visited the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art. What a beautiful day and a location steeped in history. Having the chance to snap many reference shots of the training going on that day, I've been anxious to paint my impressions of the day. This painting is titled "Andalusian Driving School". It's a 16 x 20 oil on canvas and is currently available. What an inspiring trip and this is only the first of many more paintings to come as a result!
This year we have "Louise Graves and Zavira" spotlighted. I appreciate that they embrace a piece of art for their advertising for this fundraising event. The art is used for the advertising posters and invitations. The painting is then auctioned to raise funds. Here is a link to the website where you can have your questions answered about what, where, and when for this year's Music Country Grand Prix and to learn more about Saddle UP! therapeutic riding Programs. I'm looking forward to seeing who I'll get to paint for next year!
This was a small 6 x 8 sized canvas, however the presence of their personality plus "Boaz" filled the space! It was fun to have the chance to paint a Fjord as I have not had that opportunity in the past. Their horses seem to have that wonderful Fjord lovable personality for which they are so well known. What fun that day was to see their farm that has been in the family for over 100 years.
Following Divine Fortune and his many victories and watching the heart and soul of a champion here at the Iroquois Race Day was a privilege over these past years. I'm so glad I got to follow his story even though from afar. I had a chance to see how much this horse was LOVED by Keri Brion Wolfsont and all of his connections. I only had a chance to experience Fortune from behind the lens of my camera, but he was an inspiration. When I had some time to choose a painting that I wanted to do and was not commissioned to do....I knew it had to be Divine Fortune. So here he is, inspired by that rainy day here in Nashville with Darren Nagle riding....ears up and ready to run.
They were last year's winners of the Music Country Grand Prix at Brownland Farm in Franklin, TN. This Saturday will be the 2016 Music Country Grand Prix again...a wonderful event to support SADDLE UP! Nashville's premier therapeutic Riding program located in Franklin, TN. It may be a little rainy this weekend, but that never stops horse lovers, we all know that! Find your rain boots and come on out and support this worthy cause!
I am hoping this painting acts as a big shout out for his continued success as he comes back into competition after his injury last year.

As so often happens, words appear before us that really resonate with what is going on in our minds. For me it was a quote from William Wendt, an early california impressionist painter (1865-1946).

" The true artist does not paint to please the public...but he holds the interest of all who think, for a work of art expresses the mind of the workman."
There is something about January that I really love, a whole year looming ahead, fresh starts and that sort of thing. Right now I'm at work getting all new pieces ready for the Lipscomb Academy Art Event in Nashville coming up on the weekend of February 12 - 14, 2016.
Come on out and say hello!

The painting shown here is one I'll have there this year...titled "Gaucho Leading the Leader", a 16 x 20 oil on linen. It was inspired by a recent trip to Argentina with the Criollo horses and the Gauchos outside of Buenos Aires. This is the first of a series I'd like to do with that theme.
What a wonderful weekend it was meeting so many new people, both artists and art lovers. Thank you to all who attended in person or in spirit! Here is a snapshot of my booth this year. I'm very happy with the number of paintings and prints that are now located in their new homes. The organizers of the art event worked hard to make everything so comfortable and inviting for artists and attendees alike. Thanks to all and hope to see you again next year.
One of the wondrous unexpected surprises this past Christmas was watching the space station orbit right over our house on a clear Christmas night. As it turns out...one of the astronauts orbiting as we watched grew up right across the lake from us here in Tennessee. So as he was taking a space shot of Nashville from the station...we were looking up at him. Thanks to Will for making sure that we were out there at the right time....we didn't miss it. What an awe inspiring Christmas gift from space.

Here is the shot that astronaut Butch Wilmore took from the ISS on Dec. 25.......

It's December 2014 and all the celebrating has begun! Midtown Gallery had their holiday open house a few weeks ago and the gallery owner, Gary, asked his artists to bring him some very small paintings...gift sized that might be of interest to his customers. I had so much fun making some miniature paintings that were seasonal in theme. It reminded me of sitting at my Mom and Dad's dining table and working on all sorts of Christmas inspired art when I was a kid. Thanks Gary....glad you asked....it sure got me into the spirit of things. These are all 3x4 or 4x4 in size...framed in 2 inch black frames....Some are still at Midtown if you're looking for original art oils as a gift idea.

Honestly, I didn't want to replace that picture....but time moves on and I have that picture of her on my desk now. I would click on my own blog just to see her face whenever I would log on to my computer. So it's been a few months of activity and it's about time I caught up.

September brought a great week in Austin, Tx. at a Scott Waddell portrait painting workshop. I posted about Scott's workshop last year and was very happy to have had the experience of continuing education under his tutelage again this year. SO very worth it. I heartily recommend Scott's workshops. I can feel my understanding improving with time and practice thanks to his encouraging and patient teaching methods. Here is a shot demonstrating the poster sketch as a preparation for the actual portrait.

Having a chance to have an Austin Weekend with my family all together at the end of the week was again a happy time just being together and practicing "not postponing joy".
Early November brought a trip to Vicksburg MS with my friend Elese to photograph Chula Homa Hunt's opening weekend. We were thankful for safe travel ( with Stanley, Elese's thoroughbred in tow ) fantastic weather and warm and friendly hospitality ( as usual ! ) from the members of Chula Homa Hunt. Alison and Jim Crew's beautiful property "Tilda Bogue" in Canton was the fixture for the opening day festivities and the guests were treated to horses, hounds and the beautiful delta landscape. You've seen clips of this property in movies such as "As I lay dying" and " Oh Brother where art thou". After over 20 years of leading the hunt, Sue Skipper passed the horn onto Beattie Williams to take over as Huntsman. The hunt photo here shows Beattie and her horse "Royal" setting out on the Sunday hunt after the opening.
Last week, my family gathered and we lay to rest our beloved
“mom mom”.

She was a huge part of our lives and we are all struggling
with the reality of having to say goodbye to her.

Her grandaugher, Joni, found a beautiful verse by Edna St.
Vincent Millay that helped with what feelings we are all having these days. It
goes as follows:

"I shall think of you whenever I am most happy,
whenever I am most sad,
whenever I see a beautiful thing.
You are a burning lamp to me,
a flame the wind cannot blow out,
And I shall hold you high in my hand
Against whatever darkness."

My mom was there for us at every turn in our lives and we
tried to be there for her as the tide turned in her life. Illness could not completely steal that
spark in her eye and that feisty spirit.
She never stopped telling us that she loved us even when our names where
locked away and hard to retrieve…..even when the days came when she could only
muster a whisper at best.

When I think of how lucky I was to have her as my mother I
can hardly verbalize my gratefulness.
Her last years of illness do not overshadow the many years of love,
dedication and vitality she showed all of us since the days we were born. The
memories of her life with us are now and will always be a comfort in years to come.
Her example of a faith filled strength and capacity for love was seemingly
boundless and we are all the better for it. Mom is gone from our arms but not gone from our lives and
she will forever be alive in our hearts.
